SEO Tip - Backlinks
Having your website pages fully optimised is of course an imperitive start to SEO (as mentioned in our previous article SEO Tip - Page Content, but having your pages fully optimised is just a part of SEO.
Along with on page optimisation, a website will look to rank higher with backlinks.
When a website links to you, it acts like a vote for your website. The more websites you have linking to you, the more votes and of course the more weight you'll carry when Google and other search engines pick up on it.
Once the search engines see that there are a few sites linking to you, they will assume that your website is fairly important, therefore, giving you credibility and a better ranking for your terms.
Now, any link is a good link, but if a website with similar content to your website links to you Google will see that as an extra vote. As your website must be pretty darned good if websites like yours are linking to you.
Better still if the website linking to you has a high page rank. The higher the page rank of a site linking to you, the stronger the vote. So if you can find a website similar to yours with a page rank of 7 and they can link to your website, then that's like gold dust in the SEO World.
One thing alot of people forget regarding SEO, is that linking to another page on your website from one of your pages also acts as a vote for your site. Sure it's not a great vote, but it's still a vote nonetheless. If you can link to other pages of your website from a certain page, do so. And hey, since we're on the topic, let's just throw a link in for fun, SEO Essex. It's as simple as that!
Now, it's very important that you get your anchor text right in your links, and also the links from other websites to encorporate your desired keywords. This of course informs Google of your keywords and what content the page is linking to.
OK, let's say you sell cakes on your website, you're based in Southend and the keyword for your search terms is 'Southend Bakers', then you're going to want your link to say exactly that and not 'Cakes and Stuff'. As youcan see from our above example, our link says SEO Essex, because that is one of the keywords we're targetting.
With that said, if a website is linking to you, then it's a good bet they like your website. Therefore, by all means drop the webmaster a line at the website and ask if you can have your anchor text say just that.
In fact, save them a bit of work and even include the code you would like to use:
<a href="www.yourwebsite.co.uk">Southend Bakers</a>
(don't forget the http:// before your website name)
This of course will make the webmaster happy that you've made the effort and they'll almost certainly oblige.
Do the same for internal links, use good anchor text and also make sure the anchor text used is relevent to the page content it's targetting.
Sometimes to get results you have to put the work in. But hey, it benefits you, so why not right?
We hope this snippet about backlinks helps you in your quest to top Google ;o)
